Website linking is a poorly understood part of search engine
optimization. In its simplest terms, it is actually
nothing more then URL links from one internet location
to someone else’s “supposedly” unassociated but topic
relevant website. In theory, the search engines (Google,
MS Bing, and Yahoo) count each of these links like small
votes rated by each's Page Rank and then calculate the links into an algorithm to
determine the most topic relevant website. That theory is simple enough until you
consider that none of the search engines actually
publish how much weight these links contribute or what
they consider to be a “relevant” link. In actual fact,
webmasters realize that the use of website linking has some impact on
a website's SEO and then it is all trial and error from that
point.
Webmasters are continually trying to determine what links are
considered to be relevant for their client’s websites.
They need to also determine any “bad” links with the
wrong websites can hurt their website’s performance.
Non-relevant links usually don’t do a website much good
either in its search rankings and can even trigger
search engine penalties if it has too many non-relevant
link partners.
Many web designers are continually trying to beat the system
with schemes like 3 way linking which attempts to trick
Google by making it look like
a website is linking to yours without requiring you to
link back. This indirect one-way type of link is supposed to have
more weight with the search engines but these 3 way link
schemes are considered by Google to be an attempt to
trick the system and can get a website penalized heavily
in the search engines.
Website linking is a small but necessary strategy in any
overall optimization program. However, poor linking
practices can greatly damage a websites performance in
the search engines. In other words, filling your link pages
with links to anyone that is willing to exchange links
with your website can be a huge mistake. In most of the
cases that we have studied a website is better off with no links
than having bad links or non-relevant links.
We do use website linking for our client's websites but we
accept only carefully researched topic relevant links to our
client’s websites and we continually monitor these links
for changes that would affect how useful that particular
link would be. We also have a large network of top
